How to Keep Your Home Free of Pests this Spring

Spring makes most people excited to come out after a cold winter to enjoy some sun. But, as with humans, pests that have also been avoiding the cold are also excited about being outside. That is why you may want to include a bit of local pest control in your spring cleaning. Although this can be an annoying task, this can help you avoid coming face to face with unwanted guests in and around your house. If you have a serious infestation, contact an expert exterminator immediately to prevent the issue from getting worse. The tips below can help you avoid an infestation this spring:

Get Rid of Standing Water or Any Leak Sources

Bugs and pests love to hang out in and around water. Thus, any source of water near your house will attract these unwanted guests. Flies, roaches, and mosquitoes can make their way into your home if you don’t clean up any water that lies around your house. Check for any leaks and clear the gutters to prevent water from accumulating.

Store Pet Food in Containers

Keeping your pet’s food uncontained can leave unwanted guests having access to dinner. You probably change your pet’s food and water bowl, so you don’t’ attract rodents and insects; however, these unwanted are just lurking around and wait until they can find uncontained food to feast on. By having regular access to food, they will decide to stay around. To make sure you don’t attract them, store all pet foods and treats in airtight containers.

Repair Cracks and Other Entry Points

Insects can squeeze their way through even small cracks. Spring is the right time to check these small gaps under window frames, near doorways, and around plumbing pipes. Make sure to seal any big holes or spaces with caulk, so rodents, spiders, and other pests cannot come into your house.

Minimize Clutter

Cleaning and keeping your home free of clutter will make your home spring- and summer-ready. Also, this will prevent unwanted guests from lurking around. Insects such as spiders tend to nest in cluttered areas in your house such as the garage and attic. Containers and cardboard boxes can be their hiding places. Cleaning the garage, attic, and other storage areas in your house can make them less susceptible to tiny bugs. Also, keep plants at least three feet away from your house as they can attract unwanted pests. Flowers, leaves, shrubbery, and moisture in mulch can attract rodents and insects.
