How To Make A Silicone Mold

We have been asked many times how to make a homemade silicone mold with silicone solution or resin solution (น้ำยา เร ซิ่น which is the term in thai). Sometimes the molds that you find in the market are not exactly what you want them either because of the shape or the size, and you need to make your own. Other times you have a piece that you want to copy and replicate.

The materials that we will need to create a mold are:

  • Custom plastic container with a flat bottom
  • mold silicone (silicone rubber)
  • Object to copy
  • Plastic cup
  • Mixing stick
  • Ideally, digital gramera scale

Considerations:

If you want to make a mold, you must first have the positive of the shape you want to obtain. If, for example, you want a mold in the shape of an angel, you have to have the angel piece to copy it. This piece has to have a shiny finish, ideally glass or plastic. If the piece is opaque or porous, the mold will not be shiny since the silicone copies the surface very well, and it will be precisely the same.

For example, if you have a quartz (stone) ring that you like and want to replicate in resin. So to create the silicone mold with silicone rubber or epoxy resin, use the ring as a piece to be copied. In this article, we will explain it through the ring mold example to make it clearer.

The first thing we will do is clean the ring and place it in a container as small as possible. The ring must be glued to the bottom of the container with bio-adhesive only on the flat parts of the ring in contact with the bottom. Once we have the positive ready, we proceed to make the mixture of the mold silicone.

Mold silicone is pink and consists of two components A and B. These are mixed in equal parts. For example, for the ring mold, we need approximately 60 grams in total of the mixture.

Then we place the plastic cap on the weight and begin to weigh part A 30 grams, and then in the same glass, add part B 30 grams more and mix it quickly with an ice cream stick.

Mix for approximately 1-2 minutes, and the mixture is ready for pouring.

When you empty the rubber, do it slowly so that it can cover all the spaces completely. The rubber has to cover the part entirely and even over it for at least 5mm.

Wait a few hours; in this case, the rubber dried at 3-4 hours and then unmold the piece. If you have problems unmolding the rubber, we recommend that you add a little release agent on the surface of the container; it will make it easier.
