Napalm Death

Napalm Death est un groupe de Grind/Death Metal, formé en 1981 près de Birmingham en Angleterre par Nicholas Bullen et Miles Ratledge.

Le groupe est généralement reconnu comme étant l'un des précurseurs du genre Grind ou "Grindcore" (ou tout du moins celui qui en a officialisé l'apparition), mélange de Crust/Hardcore et de Death Metal. Le groupe évolua durant sa carrière et sa musique se tourna plus vers le Death Metal au fil des années, tout en gardant une éthique très Grind.

Biographie

Napalm Death était à l'origine un groupe dont le son évoluait entre le crust, le punk et le hardcore et dont les textes étaient dans la veine de l'anarcho punk de tel que le pratiquaient Crass (un titre de Napalm Death figurera d'ailleurs sur un sampler de Crass Records regroupant les artistes les plus "Do It Yourself" du moment).

Les deux principaux membres du groupes à ce moment sont Nik Bullen et Miles Ratledge, de cette période découle l'enregistrement de plusieurs démos dont la mythique "Hatred Surge", Miles Ratledge quittera ensuite le groupe en 1986.

Nik Bullen se concentre donc sur le chant et la basse et s'entoure de Justin Broadrick à la guitare et de Mick Harris à la batterie, ce dernier étant souvent considéré comme l'inventeur du blast-beat ou tout du moins celui qui a le plus popularisé cette technique de frappe ainsi que le terme.

Suite à la démo "From Enslavement to Obliteration", le premier témoignage discographique officel devait être un split 12" avec le combo crust/grind Atavistic qui ne verra finalement jamais le jour mais pour lequel douze titres furent enregistrés par Napalm Death. Suite à cet échec, Bullen et Broadrick jetèrent l'éponge, ce dernier allant notamment s'illustrer au sein de Godflesh aux cotés de G.C. Green.

Unique membre restant, Mick Harris forma rapidement un nouveau line-up comprenant Lee Dorian au chant, Bill Steer à la guitare et qui mène en parallèle Carcass, autre fameux combo grind/death et Jim Whiteley à la basse.

Ce nouveau line-up enregistra en 1987 seize nouveaux titres en début d'année. Ainsi naquit "Scum" premier album légendaire du groupe qui compilait alors en Face A les douze titres enregistrés par Bullen, Broadrick et Harris l'année précédente et en Face B les seize nouveaux titres fraîchement enregistrés.

"Scum" est souvent considéré comme le signe officiel de l'apparition du Grindcore, ce qui ne veut pas dire que c'était le premier album de Grind, on considère souvent que "Horrified" de Repulsion sorti en 1986, était le premier album du genre.

En 1987, Jim Whiteley fut remplacé à la basse par celui qui allait porter Napalm Death à une autre dimension: Shane Embury.

Batteur au sein d'Unseen Terror, Warhammer et Azagtoth, et guitariste dans Drop Dead, Embury est aujourd'hui le plus ancien membre de Napalm Death a en faire toujours partie (il s'est d'ailleurs distingué dans un certains nombre de projets parallèles).

Suite à la sortie du deuxième album "From Enslavement to Obliteration", la réputation de Napalm Death et de son label de l'époque Earache grandissent rapidement et de manière constante. Le groupe écuma les salles de concerts un peu partout dans le monde, apparut régulièrement en direct dans la émission de John Peel (auquel ils vont d'ailleurs dédier "The Code is Red...Long Live The Code, suite à sa mort) sur Radio One/BBC et apparut même sporadiquement à la télévision britannique.

Mais après un split avec le groupe japonais S.O.B., le EP "mentally murdered" et une tournée japonaise, Bill Steer décide de se consacrer pleinement à Carcass et Lee Dorian part fonder Cathedral.

Sont engagés alors deux guitaristes américains, fin 1989: Jesse Pintado des non moins cultes Terrorizer et Mitch Harris de Righteous Pigs et Defecation. Et c'est Barney Greenway de Benediction qui prendra la place de chanteur. Ce nouveau line-up inaugure un son plus Death Metal avec la sortie d'Harmony Corruption et son lot d'EPs.

En cette période où le Death Metal est très coté, Napalm Death apparait un peu partout et s'offre une place de choix dans le choeur des fans du style, ce qui permet de bien faire le lien entre la scène Grindcore et la scène Death Metal, pas encore aussi proches qu'aujourd'hui.

Mais Mick Harris qui en a visiblement assez de jouer du Death Metal, s'en va pour former un groupe aux visées nettement plus expérimentales, Scorn, avec Justin Broadrick et Nik Bullen (soit le line-up de la face A de "Scum") en 1991...

Mais les membres de Napalm Death vont vite lui trouver un remplaçant en la personne de Danny Herrera.

Cette formation va tenir jusqu'en 1997 lorsque Barney Greenway s'éclipse quelques temps pour aller chanter sur le "Damage 381" de Extreme Noise Terror (l'autre symbole du Grind anglais), alors que les membres restants vont faire une tentative peu concluante avec Phil Vane...d'Extreme Noise Terror, justement.

Mais Greenway va rapidement revenir au bercail (Phil Vane n'avait en revanche pas quitté E.N.T.) et la formation ne va plus changer jusqu'à 2004, années pendant lesquelles le groupe ne chomera pas, sortant notamment la compilation de raretés "Noise for Music Sakes", le live "Corruption", ainsi que toutes les sessions radios effectuées à la BBC.

Cette année-là, c'est Jesse Pintado qui va quitter le groupe pour revenir aux U.S.A.( notamment pour reformer Terrorizer).

Il aura juste le temps d'enregistrer le deuxième album du groupe "Dark Days Ahead", avant de mourir en 2006, suite à une trop forte consommation de drogues alors que l'univers du grind se remettait tout juste de la mort de Mieszko Talarczyk, chanteur de Nasum décédé lors du Tsunami et auquel Napalm Death dédiait justement l'album "The Code is Red...".

Mais le groupe va vite s'en remettre et sort en 2007 l'album Smear Campaign suivi d'une tournée à travers le monde...
