Groupe de Hard Rock anglais formé en 1969 à Birmingham.

Ce groupe emblématique des années 1970 est sans aucun doute l'inventeur du style Heavy Metal et à l'origine du Doom Metal. Le groupe a eu dans ses rangs le célebre Ozzy Osbourne ou encore Ronnie James Dio.

Biographie

Black Sabbath, groupe de Birmingham se forme en 1969. Avant de prendre ce nom, le groupe s'appellera successivement Mythologie, Polka Tulk puis Earth, nom qu'ils changèrent parce que déjà pris par un autre groupe. Enfin début 1969 après plusieurs concerts en Europe, ils décident d’opter pour Black Sabbath, d'après le titre du film d'horreur italien Black Sabbath, de Mario Bava sorti en 1963.

En 1970 paraît le premier album de "Black Sabbath", un éponyme qui va devenir culte. Sorti tout d’abord en Angleterre ce disque arrive à entrer dans le top 10 anglais mais va exploser dans les charts américains quelques mois plus tard et y rester pendant plus d’un an (année durant laquelle plus d’un million de disque seront vendus aux USA) alors que la critique fustige le groupe.

La même année le groupe sort "Paranoïd", l’album sort quasiment en même temps que le premier aux USA mais cela n’empêche pas les ventes et l’album devient numéro 1 et s’écoule à 4 millions d’exemplaires (encore aux USA) et reste l’album le plus vendu du groupe.

Le groupe enchaîne alors les sorties d’albums à une cadence incroyable, 8 albums sortiront en effet entre 1970 et 1978. Après "Black Sabbath", "Paranoïd suivent "Master Of Reality" (1971), c'est à partir de cet album que Tony Iommi doit porter des prothèses de sa fabrication (à cause d'un accident du travail) et commence à accorder sa guitare un ton et demi plus bas (imité ensuite par Geeze Butler), ce qui donne un son plus lourd à ses riffs et au son global du groupe.

"Black Sabbath - vol 4" (1972), "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" (1973, premier album où le clavier est officiellement présent avec Rick Wakeman de Yes), "Sabotage" (1975), "We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll" (où le groupe commence à opérer des changements de plus en plus marquant sur ses compositions sous l’influence de Iommi (guitare) alors que Ozzy Osbourne s’y oppose), "Technical Ecstasy" (1976, qui va plus loin dans les innovations voulues par Iommi se vend bien mais moins que les précédents,

Osbourne décide alors de quitter le groupe qui est remplacé quelque temps par Dave Walker de Savoy Brown, le groupe sort alors "Never Say Die !" (1978) avec... Ozzy Osbourne au chant.

Osbourne quitte le groupe (problème personnel, drogue, divergence musicale, entre autre). Pour certains l’histoire Black Sabbath s’arrête en 1979 avec le départ de son chanteur original. Ozzy Osbourne va alors commencer une carrière solo.

Après le départ de Osbourne, le groupe engage Ronnie James Dio (Rainbow) et prend son temps avant de sortir en 1980 "Heaven And Hell", le groupe renoue alors avec le succès, un live (enregistré avec Ozzy) sort en même temps : "Black Sabbath Live At Last".

Bill Ward (batterie) quitte alors Black Sabbath à cause de problèmes de santé et est remplacé par Vinnie Appice, le jeune frère de Carmine Appice.

En 1981 le groupe avec plus que deux membres originels enregistre "Mob Rules" lui aussi est un succès.

Pour l'album suivant, un live, Dio et Iommi ne s’entendent pas sur le mixage et Dio quitte alors Black Sabbath mais "Live Evil" sort tout de même en 1983.

Bill Ward retourne alors dans le groupe pour un petit moment et Dio est remplacé par Ian Gillan, ex chanteur de Deep Purple. Ce line-up enregistre "Born Again" en 1983 qui sera disque d'or, Ian Gillan quitte alors le groupe pour Deep Purple qui se reforme.

En 1985 pour un concert unique (Live Aid) Ozzy Osbourne revient au chant.

Geezer Butler quitte à son tour le groupe en 1985, où ne reste plus que Tony Iommi qui sort en 1986 un album solo mais sous le nom Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi : "Seventh Star". Le line-up pour cette sortie est alors : Glenn Hughes (chant), David Spitz (basse), Geoff Nichols (clavier), Eric Singer (batterie, futur Kiss) et bien évidemment Iommi. L’album est un semi échec.

En 1987, Iommi seul au commande de Black Sabbath sort un nouvel album : "The Eternal Idol", au chant on trouve Tony Martin, la basse et la batterie sont alors tenues par Bob Daisley et Bev Bevan. Après encore quelques changements de line-up le groupe sort "Headless Cross" (1989) puis "Tyr" (1990).

En 1992 sort "Dehumanizer", un album réunissant le line-up de 1978 à 1983 (Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, Vinnie Appice et Iommi) qui renoue avec le succès. Ozzy Osbourne doit alors rejoindre le groupe mais ça ne sera qu’un effet d’annonce.

Les albums suivants réuniront certains membres des différents line-up, "Cross Purposes" en 1994 (avec Tony Martin au chant), "Forbidden" (1995 de nouveau Tony Martin au chant).
