Agalloch est un groupe américain venant de Portland, dans l'Oregon fondé en 1995. Ce groupe joue un mélange de Dark Metal, de Metal Folk, de Doom Metal et d'Ambient.

Biographie

L'essence de la musique d'Agalloch consiste en une combinaison froide de tristesse et de naturel.
La fondation du groupe remonte en 1995, quand un groupe de doom/death appellé Aeolachrymae a été réduit en cendres. De ces cendres, trois groupes sont nés : Nothing, Susurrus Inanis... et Agalloch.
Le premier but d'Agalloch, selon J. Haughm et S. Breyer, était de jouer un épique et majestueux Dark Metal. Dès 1996, quelques morceaux ont commencé à prendre forme, et un deuxième guitariste a rejoint le groupe, L. Anderson. Plus tard, la démo "From Which Of This Oak" fut enregistrée et peu après, mise dans les bacs. C'est alors qu'un bassiste rejoignit le groupe : J. William.
Début 1998, Agalloch enregistra un promo destinée aux labels, laquelle attira un contrat avec The End Records, puis ils se mirent au travail, afin de réaliser leur premier album. L'album, intitulé "Pale Folklore", fut terminé en juin 1999. Celui-ci reçut un très bon accueil, dû à son aspect triste : après l'écoute du disque, le nom de l'album, "Pale Folklore" prend tout son sens. Malgré le succès, le groupe ne fait plus trop parler de lui jusqu'au milieu de l'année 2001 où le groupe enregistre un MCD "Of Stone, Wind, and Pillor". Il s'agit là d'un rassemblement de morceaux non terminés de 1998 à 2001, inclus un hommage à Sol Invictus (néofolk) : "Kneel to The Cross". Ce morceau est d'ailleurs apparu sur un "tribute" a Sol Invictus.
De 2001 à 2002, le groupe enregistre un second album, appelé "The Mantle", un disque de 70 minutes qui va se révéler une grande expérience pour le groupe. "The Mantle" signifie une expression de lenteur (d'où un certain aspect doom), de désespoir, et d'autres sentiments de même gamme. Cet album porte Agalloch à sa maturité, et demeure surement la meilleure production du groupe à ce jour.
"Ashes Against the Grain" est le dernier album du groupe. Sorti en 2006, il signifie pour le groupe un "nouveau départ, mais aussi une extension". Un mélange de black metal, de folk, d'ambient, de doom...
